Ever hear the saying, "I'm in a pickle?"
Apparently the word pickle is derived from the Dutch word, 'pekel' which refers to being in a tough situation or being stuck... hence... the pickle stuck in the jar.
Ever been in a 'career pickle'?
Here are career pickles I've heard over the years and followed by a few thoughts to push you toward a solution:
I no longer have a 'seat' at the table.
I'm bored; I don't feel tied to purpose.
I want to start my own business but I'm scared.
My company may be downsizing, but I'll just wait it out.
I need to hire, but I don't have time or know where to start.
Our company culture is terrible; people are leaving.
I've applied for multiple promotions and nada!
By definition, I'd say all of these qualify as 'career pickles' where people feel stuck!
So, what can you do?
Here are 7 ways out- no matter which 'career pickle' you are facing.
Take time to examine what is happening. Why? What is the root cause? What have you tried thus far? What might be another option?
Has the company mission changed or have you evolved in your emotional intelligence and skill set that makes you ready for more?
Determine the 'why' behind why you want to start your own business. If it's wealth or fame, STOP. Money will come when you follow your passion. What is your passion?
I always ask my clients: If you had a magic wand and weren't afraid, what would be your next step?
Why do we allow comfort to drive our decisions? Wouldn't you rather control your own destiny? Think of all the mundane, daily decisions you make to control your day's destiny- time to wake up, what you eat, what you do before/after work, etc. So, why in the world would you allow someone else to control your destiny on more significant matters like your job and your income? Be proactive. Update your resume; build your network; seek out a mentor or career coach.
Hiring the right team members will make or break yours and your team's success as well as impact profitability. Do it correctly. Don't rush. Clearly define the role and the requirements. Post the job, but better yet- tap into your network for a referral. People aren't going to just jump for a new job; they want culture, purpose, connection and growth. Make your opening attractive and 'the one' they jump for!
Your work satisfaction is highly attributed not only to the work itself but where and how you do it.
In the words of Jim Rohn, "If you do not like how things are, change it. You are not a tree."
If you have applied for multiple promotions and have not landed one within your current organization, it may be time to take your talents elsewhere. Consider why you are only applying internally. Is it easy? Are you afraid? Do you LOVE your current organization?
Consider these last 3 questions:
If you were not afraid, what would be your next step?
What 2 things would make your career more fulfilling in 2025?
What is 1 change personally and professionally that would make you happier in 2025?
Career development is a choice and requires deliberate attention and nurturing by YOU- not your boss or your organization. BY YOU!!!
If you are wondering how to build and work a personal career development plan for you, or if you are the boss- your team, let's chat in 2025!
