How to Streamline & Simplify What Gets Your Attention At Work

julieaverillshore

I remember the first time I received a text message back in 2009.

I was like- what is this? Don't text me... I don't have that service.

Fast forward, to today, as I write this blog, I have 90 unread text messages.

Does it mean I'm disorganized?

Does it mean I don't care?

Regardless of the opinion you are forming at this very moment, I know it's about what I am CHOOSING to prioritize.

At any given time, I have unread text messages along with about 100 unread emails.

If I just sat and responded all day long to emails and text messages, I'm not sure how much work I'd actually get done.

My clients deserve better and more from me than being distracted or not present during an interview, a strategy or coaching session.

Is it really that simple?

Do I ever fail? Of course I do.

But I will tell you what I've learned, when I, for instance, shut down my email and don't look at it except for the beginning and the end of the day, I am much more productive, happier and it takes me a lot less time to respond.

Here is a checklist to help you discern what should/should not be taking your time and attention at work:

  1. How often do you allow distractions into your daily work life?

    1. Are they truly urgent or do you choose to allow them to be urgent?

  2. Whose agenda are you working each day?

    1. No matter where you are on the organizational chart, you still have control over your time, energy and focus. Remember- when you say 'yes' to one thing, you are saying 'no' to another, and not all tasks, etc. are of equal value, weight and priority.

  3. What long term goals are looming or lingering over your head?

    1. When was the last time you took a piece of that goal and finished one task toward that goal?

  4. Why does your job exist?

    1. When you get stuck on managing your priorities and time at work, go back to this answer. BONUS- write out this answer and refer back to it frequently.

  5. What are you striving toward each and every day and how does that tie to your organizational or personal mission statement?

    1. Are you spending time on what really matters or what are really needle moving activities?

    2. Or are you just busy... being busy?

Just as the leaves begin to change color in most states during the fall season, there is truly a time and a season for your talents and strengths.

If, however, you find yourself in a relentless season of roadblocks, spinning your wheels and spending time on things that are not benefiting others, perhaps we should chat.

Remember- you hold the power to streamline your day.

You have the choice to focus on things that you can control. The question is will you?
