Unleashing the Power of Connection: How to Forge Authentic Bonds in a Virtual Work Environment

julieaverillshore

Since the pandemic, remote work for many professions has become a norm, making genuine connections more vital than ever.

With screens and distances separating us from our colleagues, the challenge becomes how to create authentic relationships, especially if are starting a new job.

Here is the good news: authenticity can flourish in virtual settings so long as you are intentional!

So, let’s explore practical ways to cultivate these connections remotely.

The Shift to Remote Work

The COVID-19 pandemic swiftly pushed many organizations from traditional office spaces to online platforms. According to a survey by Gallup, 54% of employees prefer hybrid work arrangements, indicating a significant shift in work culture.

Remote work transcends geographical boundaries, allowing teams to collaborate from multiple locations. While this can be seen as a win for better work-life balance, it can often create obstacles to forming collaborative and genuine working relationships.

Understanding GENUINE Connections

So, what does it mean to build authentic or genuine connections in a virtual position? The 3 keys:

  1. Transparency

  2. Trust,

  3. Respect

Nurturing these authentic connections requires effort and intentionality. It is vital to invest time in relationships that can significantly impact your career.

Embrace Technology: Beyond Just Email

Earlier in my career, I led a fully virtual team, prior to COVID. Despite common beliefs, I was the 'least lonely' work from home leader. Our team often met several times a day via Zoom and the rule was always- cameras on! This simple habit made us feel heard, seen and as if we were in the same room physically when we met.

A study from the Harvard Business Review found that remote teams that utilize video conferencing report higher engagement levels.

TIP: rather than sending a quick email, try scheduling regular video check-ins- even if just for 10 minutes.

This approach allows team members to observe non-verbal cues that enhance connection. Seeing a friendly face can significantly improve morale and strengthen relationships.

Virtual Team Building Activities

Team-building isn't reserved for physical environments; it can be just as effective online! Incorporating fun activities like online games, trivia nights, or virtual coffee breaks can help forge stronger connections.

Research shows that teams that participate in casual activities can improve productivity by 15%.

TIP: The Kolbe Team Success Workshop was a hit during COVID and since then. This can easily be done virtually with team members. Learn more here.

Encourage Open Communication

Creating a culture of open communication is crucial for fostering authentic connections.

TIP: As a leader or supervisor, be intentional about setting up regular one-on-one sessions to connect with team members. Each time I hear that a person only connects with their supervisor intentionally once a month, I cringe as those without intention often lose momentum on projects, don't build trusting relationships and often get stuck or burnt out.

Celebrate Achievements

Celebrating team milestones and individual achievements boosts morale and strengthens bonds. Yet, in a remote setting, accomplishments can often go unnoticed.

TIP: Establish a routine for recognizing achievements—just small shout-outs during team meetings or celebrating birthdays and work anniversaries can make a huge difference. According to a Gallup study, teams that regularly celebrate successes see a 20% increase in team performance.

TIP: Try this: Fantastic Fridays- nominate one team accomplishment. Too often we go about our days working our in-boxes and focused on what isn't working or going well. Be intentional.

Foster a Culture of Empathy

Empathy is yes, a point of vulnerability, but also a way to demonstrate care and help employees know they are heard.

TIP: Each Monday, share for 10 minutes- one great thing that happened over the weekend and one hiccup- ok- maybe something that didn't go as planned.

Create Opportunities for Collaboration

Collaboration on committees or projects outside of your job title create 2 benefits:

  1. It can energize employees who feel stuck.

  2. It can increase learning about another area of your organization.

TIP: Encourage projects that require team members from different departments to collaborate toward shared goals. This not only strengthens professional connections but allows individuals to showcase their talents, which enriches the overall team experience.

Share Personal Stories- We are all human after all!

As much as we all try to leave home at home and work at work, especially when working remotely, the lines can get a little fuzzy.

TIP: Host regular “story-sharing” sessions where individuals recount significant life events and share a picture that goes along with the story. Do a virtual lunch- intentionally allowing kids or dogs to join in, too!

Leverage Informal Spaces

Just because you're working remotely doesn’t mean informal interactions should be neglected- hence the proverbial water cooler.

TIP: Set up a Slack or Teams channel for casual chatting, gaming, or sharing hobbies.

The Path Ahead

Building genuine connections in a remote work environment is both possible and essential for long-term success. It's a fine balance of embracing technology, fostering empathy, and encouraging open communication.

Could you break one of those down next week?
